Genevieve, who just graduated from first grade, carries her Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer book around the house like a trophy. Why? Because in first grade she learned to read. And her beautiful (and in Genevieve’s eyes, nothing but perfect) first grade teacher, Ms. Clausen, gave her a copy of the book to read over the summer. But on the first day of vacation, I kid you not, the FIRST day, my eight-year old told me she was bored.

So, now that she’s a reader, we’ve decided to do a book club. That’s right Ms. Clausen, not only gave the book to my proud reader, she gave copies to all of the kids in Genevieve’s reading group. So we’ve invited a few graduated firsties over next week to discuss Judy Moody to ensure that my second child does NOT have the Bummer Summer we all fear. In fact if you are looking for something to make you look totally stellar in front of other moms, plan a book club for your kids. The kids don’t even need to know how to read. You just invite them over, pick a snack and game or craft that connects to the book and everyone thinks you’re like the Queen of Literacy.

In fact if you’re looking for a book club to join this summer for some mom reading and conversation, might I suggest the MOPS International online book clubs: MOPS.org/bookclub. We are currently reading Mom Connection by Tracey Bianchi. And July’s book selection is… The Artist’s Daughter: A Memoir.

Genevieve’s a little nervous to try this book club thing with her friends. She wants to look smart, insightful and like she knows what she’s doing with this book club thing. Okay the truth is the same goes for me. I’ve never been part of a book club where I’ve been the author of the book. I want to look smart, insightful and like I know what I’m doing with this book club thing. It would be helpful to have some friends there cheering me on (and asking easy questions, the ones I know the answers to.)

Summer is the time for reading, talking, and reading some more. So if you are interested in participating in the MOPS International July book club, order your copy NOW so you are ready to discuss in a few weeks and together we will have a NOT Bummer Summer.
